Bing Places optimization for Bing search and Bing Maps

Bing keeps its own business records, and Microsoft's assistant looks things up through Bing. Most local listings there are half finished, which leaves room to stand out.

Bing Places optimization

Why does my business need a Bing Places listing?

Because Bing builds its own local results on Bing search and Bing Maps from its own business records, and Microsoft's assistant leans on Bing when it searches for an answer. Optimus Business Solutions in Salem, New Hampshire claims or creates your Bing listing in your name, completes the fields Bing reads, and keeps it fresh. Bing states plainly that it weighs relevance, distance and popularity, and a complete listing that matches your website gives it the most to go on.

Who looks here

Who searches on Bing, and why it reaches past Bing

Bing is the default search on Windows computers and in the Edge browser, so plenty of people use it at a work desk without ever choosing it. Bing's index also feeds other search tools and assistants that look things up on the web. A business missing from Bing, or listed with an old phone, is absent from all of those results. And because few local competitors finish their Bing listing, a complete one stands out.

  • Drivers checking Bing Maps for who is nearby
  • Assistants that look up local businesses through Bing

Claimed or imported, then verified

Bing often holds a record of your business already, pulled from data providers. That record gets claimed instead of a second one added, or a new listing is created if none exists. When you already have a verified Google profile, Bing can bring it in and verify the listing on the spot, skipping the mailed PIN that often stalls. The listing sits under a sign-in you own.

  • Bing's existing record claimed, not duplicated
  • Verified through your Google profile when you have one
  • Listed under a sign-in that belongs to you

Every Bing field completed, including ones Google lacks

Some of Bing's fields never come over from Google. Its services list is its own, so the services you actually do get picked one by one. Then the most precise primary category and the extra ones that fit, the towns you serve with the address hidden if you travel to customers, hours with holiday dates, a description, tagged photos, and the details Bing asks about, like veteran or women ownership.

  • Services chosen from Bing's own list
  • Precise categories instead of a broad bucket
  • Photos tagged the way Bing asks

Every month

Fresh enough that Bing keeps trusting it

Bing says it can push a listing down when its details have not been updated for more than six months, and it checks every change against outside data before publishing. So the listing gets a regular look: hours and holidays updated, new photos added, user feedback read, and any detail Bing replaced from an outside source put back. Bing has no reviews of its own; the ratings it shows come from sites like Yelp.

  • Regular updates so the listing never goes stale
  • Details Bing overwrote caught and corrected
  • Feedback from Bing users read each month

Can Bing just copy my Google profile?

Yes. Bing can import a verified Google profile and keep it in step on a schedule. The catch is that the copied fields, like name, phone and categories, are then locked on Bing and can only change through Google. Bing's services list and some other details still have to be filled in on Bing itself, which is where most imported listings stop short.

How long before my listing shows on Bing?

After verification, Bing runs its own publishing review, which it says takes about one to two weeks, and an edit during that time can restart the clock. A listing sometimes appears on Bing before the dashboard says so, so the live listing gets checked directly instead of trusting the status line.

Why are there no reviews on my Bing listing?

Bing does not collect reviews itself. It shows ratings matched from other sites, Yelp and TripAdvisor among them, and it matches them by your name, address and phone. When those details differ from site to site, the ratings may never attach to your listing, which is one more reason the details have to agree everywhere.

Does a Bing listing get me named by assistants?

Nobody can promise that. What is true is that Microsoft's assistant and other tools look things up through Bing, and Bing's view of your business comes partly from this listing and partly from your website. A complete, consistent Bing listing gives those lookups correct facts to find. It does not guarantee your name comes back.

Is Bing worth the effort for a small trade?

It takes some care once and a light touch after that, and the payoff is a place in results most of your competitors ignore. Few local businesses finish their Bing listing, so a complete one is a real edge there in a way it no longer is on Google.
