Google AI Mode is a search tab that answers a question in written sentences instead of a list of links, and Google said in May 2026 that it passed 1 billion monthly active users within a year of opening to the public. For a business owner, the practical point is what those answers are built from: your business profile, the reviews written about you, and the pages on your website. If those three are thin or wrong, the answer about you is thin or wrong too.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews is the summary that appears above the normal results on a regular Google search. AI Mode is a separate tab where the whole search works like a conversation: you ask a question in plain words, you get a written answer, and you can ask a follow-up. Google opened AI Mode to every US user on May 20, 2025, and said the same custom Gemini 2.5 model runs behind both features.

Think of AI Overviews as the summary at the top of the page you already know, and AI Mode as a page that is only the summary. Both read the same web. Both decide which businesses to name.
How fast did AI Mode grow?
Faster than any search feature Google has shipped in years. Google reported the figures on its own blog and earnings calls, so the numbers below are Google's own.
| Date | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| May 2025 | 1.5 billion monthly users (Google I/O, as reported by Yahoo Finance) | Opened to all US users |
| July 2025 | Over 2 billion monthly users in more than 200 countries and 40 languages | Over 100 million monthly active users in the US and India |
| May 2026 | Over 2.5 billion monthly active users | Over 1 billion monthly active users |
Google also said in May 2025 that AI Overviews were driving more than a 10 percent increase in Google usage for the kinds of searches that show them, in the US and India. On its July 2026 earnings call Google said AI Mode had expanded worldwide the previous October and that Search and Other revenue was up 17 percent. Google is not treating this as an experiment. It is the direction of the product.
Do people actually read the AI answers?
Most do. Pew Research Center surveyed 5,119 US adults in February 2026 and found 60 percent had read the AI summaries at the top of search results, 30 percent had not, and adults 65 and older were the least likely to have read them. In an October 2025 Pew survey, one in five US adults called those summaries extremely or very useful and 52 percent called them somewhat useful.
Reading is not the same as trusting. A Yelp-commissioned Morning Consult survey of 2,202 US adults in February 2026 found only 15 percent trust AI search a lot, 63 percent double-check AI results against other sources, and 72 percent want AI platforms to show their information sources. That is good news for a business with clean facts. The customer is going to look you up on your profile or your site anyway, and the AI answer decides whether you are on the short list they look up.
What does AI Mode pull from when someone asks for a plumber?
Three places. The same three you would check yourself if you were hiring.
1. Your business profile
Your Google Business Profile is where the AI learns your category, your address, your hours, and whether you are open right now. Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 local search experts weighted Google Business Profile signals at roughly 30 percent of what decides the local map results. The top individual factors were the primary category, distance from the searcher, keywords in the business title, a physical address in the search city, and the business being open at the time of the search. An AI answer that starts from the map results inherits every one of those signals.
2. Your reviews, especially on Yelp
Foundation Inc. and AirOps analyzed more than 28 million AI responses to local business questions between September and November 2025 across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. Yelp earned 512,680 citations, 3.4 times the next local platform, and took 72.5 percent of competitive local citations on Google AI Mode specifically. Home services 'near me' answers cited Yelp more than 66,000 times in that quarter. Google reviews still matter most to the customer reading them: BrightLocal's January 2025 survey of 1,026 US consumers found 85 percent read reviews on Google and 44 percent on Yelp. Both platforms feed the answer.
3. The pages on your website
Whitespark's same 2026 survey named a dedicated page per service as the top local organic ranking factor. An AI answer that has to explain what a company does, where it works, and what it handles can only repeat what is written down. A site with one 'Services' page and a phone number gives it almost nothing to say about you.
One honest caveat: local searches are the least affected
Semrush tracked more than 10 million keywords through 2025 and found local-intent categories showed under 3 percent AI Overview saturation. The map pack is still the main event when someone types 'roofer near me.' AI Mode matters most on the question-shaped searches around that moment: what a repair should cost, whether a leak can wait until Monday, who is open on a Sunday. Those are the searches where the answer names two or three companies and the customer picks from them.
What to do this month
- Open your Google Business Profile and confirm the primary category, address, and hours are exact, including holiday hours
- Claim your Yelp listing and keep the phone number, hours, and service list identical to what Google shows
- Give every service its own page on your site, written in the words a customer would use to ask about it
- Answer the common questions in plain sentences on those pages, because that is the text an AI answer repeats
- Search your own trade and town in AI Mode once a month and note which companies it names and what it says about them
None of this is new work. It is the same profile, review, and website upkeep that has decided map results for years. AI Mode reads all three at once and says the result out loud.
Common questions
Is AI Mode replacing the regular Google results?
Not yet. AI Mode is a separate tab, and Semrush's 2025 tracking shows local-intent searches still mostly return the map pack and standard results. The two run side by side, and both read the same profile, reviews, and website.
Do I need a different plan for AI Mode than for the map pack?
No. The inputs overlap almost completely: an accurate profile, reviews on Google and Yelp, and a page per service. Fixing those improves both.
Can I see whether AI Mode mentions my business?
Only by asking it. Search the questions a customer would ask, in AI Mode, and record which companies it names and the sources it links. Repeat monthly to see what changes.
