Google AI Mode questions run 3x longer. Does your site answer them?

According to Google's CEO, questions in AI Mode run on average three times longer than a traditional search. Here is what Google said, what Google tells site owners to do about it, and a two-minute test to see whether your website answers the whole question a customer asks.

Customers are asking Google longer, more specific questions, and the businesses that get named in the answer are the ones whose websites answer those questions in plain words. On Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings call, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, said queries in AI Mode are on average three times longer than traditional searches. Optimus Business Solutions, a web design and AI search optimization company in Salem, New Hampshire, breaks down what Google said, what Google's own guidance tells site owners to do, and a two-minute test any owner can run on their own website.

What did Google's CEO say about AI Mode searches?

On October 28, 2026, Google published an edited transcript of Sundar Pichai's remarks from the Q3 2026 earnings call. In the Search section he said people are using Google's AI features more and are searching in entirely new ways, and that their queries are longer, personalized and multimodal.

Your website and your Google profile should tell the same story.

Then came the numbers. According to Google's transcript, queries in AI Mode are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and one in five AI Mode searches around the world use voice, images or documents. Pichai also said Google's year-over-year query growth rate is the highest it has been in five years, including commercial queries. Commercial queries are the searches people make when they are looking to buy something or hire someone.

Two more lines from the same remarks matter for a local business. Pichai said Google is building one seamless experience across AI Overviews, AI Mode and traditional Search, so the same answer engine sits behind all three. And he said Google is focused on helping people get things done, such as booking reservations, filling in forms and scheduling appointments, and that as a next step Google is bringing those features to Search. That part is a plan, not a launch with a date, but the direction is clear.

To be precise about what was and was not said: three times longer is an average across AI Mode queries, compared with traditional searches. One in five is a global share of AI Mode searches, not a share of local searches or of any one business's customers. Google gave no count of AI Mode users in these remarks.

What does a longer question look like for a local business?

Picture the old search for a plumber. It was a few words and a prayer: plumber Salem NH. The searcher got a list and did the rest of the work themselves, clicking around to find out who did what.

A longer question sounds like a person talking. Who can replace a leaking water heater in Salem by Friday, and will they haul the old one away? It might be spoken into a phone, or sent with a photo of the puddle on the basement floor. That is not a keyword. It is the whole job in one sentence: the service, the town, the deadline and the worry.

Google then has to build one answer to that whole question. The businesses it can confidently name are the ones whose pages actually say they replace water heaters, serve Salem, can come out within days, and remove the old unit. A page that says Quality Plumbing Since 1998 and lists six services in a footer gives the answer very little to work with.

Does my website need special optimization for AI Mode?

To be fair to Google, it has been straightforward about this. Google Search Central's page on AI features and your website says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary. There is no secret AI Mode setting and nothing to buy from Google to get in.

The same page explains how the answers are built. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. A long question about a water heater in Salem can fan out into searches about the service, the area, timing and disposal, pulled from websites, Business Profiles and other sources.

Google also lists the fundamentals that continue to matter. In its own words they include making sure important content is available in textual form, checking that Business Profile information is up to date, providing a great page experience for users, and making sure structured data matches the visible text on the page. None of these are tricks. They are the basics done thoroughly, which is exactly what most small business websites skip.

How do I test whether my website answers long questions?

This takes about two minutes and needs no tools. Do it with a real question, not one you make up at your desk.

  • Write down the longest question a real customer has asked you on the phone, word for word, the way they said it.
  • Open your own website on your phone and look for the answer in plain sentences, not in a photo, a logo or a slogan.
  • Check that your services page names the jobs you do, one by one, in the words customers use.
  • Check that it names the towns you serve and how quickly you can usually get there.
  • Check that it says what happens first when someone reaches out, so the next step is obvious.
  • Open your Google Business Profile and make sure its services, area and hours say the same thing as your website.
  • If any answer only lives in your head, write it on the page as a short, clear paragraph.

What should a services page say so AI can build an answer from it?

Think of each service as a question a customer will ask in full. The page should answer the whole question, not only name the service. Here is how a short search compares with the longer question, and what the page needs to say for each part of it.

Part of the customer's questionOld short searchWhat your page should say in text
The jobplumberWe replace leaking and failed water heaters, tank and tankless
The placeSalem NHWe serve Salem, Windham, Pelham and nearby towns
The timing(nothing)Most replacements are scheduled within a few days
The worry(nothing)We haul the old unit away as part of the job
The next step(nothing)Call or send a message and we'll ask three quick questions

The example rows are illustrations, so write your own true details. The point is that each row is something a long question asks and a short search never did. When the page says it in text, and the Business Profile matches, Google has something solid to build the answer from.

Two habits make this work better over time. First, write one page or one clear section per main service instead of one page that lists everything. Second, every time a customer asks a question you have not answered on the site, add the answer. Your phone calls are the best list of long questions you will ever get.

How does Optimus help a business become the answer?

This is what Optimus does, from first look to finished build, as one plan for growing your business. Every engagement opens with an audit that scores your business next to your competitors: your website first, then Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and the other professional platforms, side by side, so you see where your market stands before we change a thing.

Then we build custom-coded websites made for the way AI search reads a page, with each service spelled out in plain language, and we run AI search optimization on the professional platforms so each listing matches the site. More than a hundred client builds, audits and content runs are documented and logged. The goal stays simple: the kind of technology big companies use, sized for the small businesses doing the real work.
